Elmwood Pumping Station is built.

1870

It is located near today’s Roxbury Community College at the corner of Elmwood Street and Roxbury Street. The facility is needed because Boston’s annexation of Roxbury and Dorchester brought with it elevated areas that cannot be supplied by the city’s gravity water system. The facility is no longer needed after construction of the High Service pumping station at Chestnut Hill in 1888.
